We stayed in Phnom Penh only two nights and thus had one full day to see it all. Of course, we haven’t managed to see everything. Phnom Penh has much more to offer. Yet here are our recommendations if you, as us, are in the city for a very short time.
1. Brown Coffee
Check out Brown Coffee for breakfast. For me, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Especially if you have a day on feet in sight.
2. Royal Palace
Royal Palace is a beautiful complex where Cambodian kings reign and an example of Khmer architecture. Entrance fee is 10 Euro per person.
3. Silver Pagoda
Silver Pagoda is a buddhist temple situated in the Royal Palace.
4. Sisowath Riverside Park
Walk along the river in the Sisowath Riverside Park.
5. The Old Market
The old market will surprise you with fish and seafood being sold there.
6. Seeing Hands Massage
We occasionally came by a massage salon where masseuses were blind people and found it a great idea! The massage was great by the way.
7. Street food waffles
On your way try street food waffles after watching them being baked.
8. Wat Phnom
Next on your itinerary should be Wat Phnom. This buddhist temple was built in the 14th century and is part of the Khmer national identity. It must also have strong religious meaning as during the new lunar year the temple was crowded.
9. The Central Market
The central market is worth visiting as you can find here everything from seafood and fruit to clothing.
10. Souvenirs shopping
Then you can shop for the fair-trade souvenirs at Artisan Village and Shack Collective.
11. Wat Botum Park
Walk in the Wat Botum Park and observe locals relaxing and children playing there.
12. The Independence Monument
Wonder at the Independence Monument and the Statue of Sihanouk Norodom, the former prime minister of Cambodia.
13. Bassac Street
Bassac Street is a cozy colorful short street full of restaurants and cafes.
14. Mama Wong
Enjoy a short break and savor handmade dumplings and a herbal tea at Mama Wong.
15. Ride a tuk-tuk
In the city, it is very convenient to drive around with a tuk-tuk taxi. You can order it vis Grab, Passapp or negotiate the price at the spot.
16. Tuol-Sleng Genocide Museum
Visit Tuol-Sleng Genocide Museum to learn about the tragedy of the genocide under the Khmer Rouge’s rule from 1975 to 1979, during which they wiped out up to a quarter of Cambodia’s population.
17. National Museum
If you want to know more about the history of the country, visit the National Museum of Cambodia.
18. Aeon Mall
After you are done with the cultural program (the museums close at 5 pm anyway), check out the Aeon Mall for souvenir shopping and wander around the shelves in the supermarket with exotic products. The fans of Japan will find here several Japanese shops (e.g. Daiso). If you have kids, here you’ll also find an indoor playground.
