Ile aux Cerfs

One of the obvious advantages of Mauritius is that all beaches on the island are public. Even the Mauritius best beaches in front of the luxurious hotels are open for eventual visitor from outside but under consideration of one condition – you are not allowed to trespass the hotel private territory, which starts where the beach ends. Respective signs will not fail to remind you of that.

Beaches in Mauritius are in abundance! And there are plenty of beautiful beaches as well which are easy to reach by public transport and on your two. During our week in Mauritius, we visited 10 beaches and here is a short recap of our experience. I tried to range them from 1 to 10 (see the numbers in red on the map) where 1 is the best beach in my personal opinion (location is also considered).

Mauritius Beaches
Le Morne

  1. Poste La Fayette

A very nice but very small clean beach in the Eastern part of the island.

  1. Flic en Flac

Flic en Flac is the longest beach on the island surrounded by coniferous (similar to pine) trees instead of palm trees we used to. This beach is one of the favorites among the locals and is highly populated at any time of the day. Many food tracks and fruit bars will support you if you feel thirsty or hungry.

  1. Gran Baie

We went off the bus next to the Café Müller and enjoyed a pleasant stroll (beware: some light climbing over the rocks is included) along the narrow and somehow very cozy beach to the central haven of the Gran Baie village.

  1. Pereybere

We briefly visited this clean narrow beach in a calm haven on our way to Cap Malheureux. A stop worth a short but enjoyable dip in clear water of incredible color

  1. Mon Choisy

This natural beach was closest to our hotel. Spread over several kilometers from Mon Choisy village to the North, it includes the public beach in the Southern part where local gather together for a picnic and a luxury beach in front of the expensive all-inclusive hotels in the North. The whole stroll will take about 30 minutes in one direction.

  1. La Plage Coden

I’m not sure if this is the official name of this beach, but it is listed as such on the Google maps, next to the Balaclava village. At first, we were a bit skeptical about the worthiness of the visit as the beach supposed to be tiny. However, the Google maps somehow didn’t reflect the real size of this beach: it’s pretty long and beautifully scenic.

  1. Belle Mare Plage

Lost between luxurious hotels, the exit to this beach is not so easy to find. Enter the narrow looping street between the Constance Belle Mare and Long Beach hotels and drive till the road ends. When you face ocean, walk all the way to the right – little havens with almost no people there will reward you after the first one or two hundred meter. If you proceed further, you will walk along the cultured beaches of the Long Beach Hotel.

  1. Le Morne

Le Morne is in my opinion one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. It is also surrounded by the coniferous (similar to pine) trees. A fascinating view to the mountain carrying the same name adds to its superiority. In the southern corner of the peninsula many wind- and kite-surfers (we have even seen a couple of wave-surfers) are training. On the beach you can also try a sea-hedgehog (if you dare to eat it raw).

  1. Troux aux Biches

The second closest beach to our hotel, Troux aux Biches, can be definitely called one of our favorites. Though very lively, this was one of the most beautiful and clean beaches we have experienced in Mauritius.

  1. Ile aux Cerfs

Ile aux Cerfs with its lite-turquoise ‘’river’’ flowing on the island became one of the highlights of our vacation. To go there, you have to take a motorboat from Trou d’Eau Douce. The price for a return trip lies between 350 and 400 rupees. The last boat departs from the island around 5 pm, so it will be enough time to indulge yourself into the tender and caressing clear blue water. If you want to take some pictures in the famous river, my advice you should be to be one of the last ones who leave the island –  at any other time the river is simply too full.

If you are bored from lying on the beach, take a stroll along the secluded beach of the Shangri-La Resort.
